 Cristinaland
Essay by Poe Ballantine
“I don’t know how the average American does it: house, car, insurance, wedding ring, Viagra (eight bucks a pill!), new roof, water heater, washer and dryer, college tuition, and an antique hardwood dining-room table that weighs two hundred pounds and won’t fit through the front door. Say what you will, the American dream, even the discount version, is one expensive proposition.”

 From the June 2004 issue:
Behold
Fiction by Tim Melley
“For a Catholic kid, there was nothing good about Good Friday. From dawn to dusk, we had to fast on toast and tea, and then, when we were good and starving, we had to choke down a bowl of my mom’s fish stew. We couldn’t cut loose or even watch TV. We were supposed to mope around looking glum.”

Luc Saunders, editorial assistant at The Sun, recommends this story. He said: “I laughed. I cried. I held my mother just a little bit longer the next time I hugged her.”
