Edward Tick On How The U.S. Fails Its Returning Soldiers
Interview by David Kupfer
Edward Tick began counseling Vietnam veterans in the 1970s, at a time when the nation was trying to put the Vietnam War behind it and post-traumatic stress disorder (ptsd) wasn't yet a diagnostic category. Since then he has treated veterans of numerous conflicts, from the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s to the Iraq War of today.

These Dark Woods
Essay by Poe Ballantine
When my son Tom was born, I was surprised that there was nothing physically wrong with him. I suppose this is the reaction of many first-time older parents. Proud and relieved to have a “normal” child, I had no aspirations for my son to become an artist or to graduate from Harvard or to conquer India. All I wanted for him was good health, sanity, and a shot at being whatever he desired to be.

Everything, All At Once

Writing from The Sun wins the Pushcart Prize
|
Three essays published in The Sun were recently awarded the Pushcart Prize, which honors exceptional writing from America’s small presses. Authors receiving this honor were Akhim Yuseff Cabey [“Bang, Bang, in a Boy Voice,” July 2007], Brenda Miller [“Blessing of the Animals,” November 2007], and our very own Krista Bremer [“My Accidental Jihad,” October 2007], an associate publisher at The Sun. The essays will be published next year in the anthology Pushcart Prize XXXIII: Best of the Small Presses. Our congratulations to the authors.
